2002 Sleep in America Poll
Events of September 11th take dramatic toll on American's sleep
Washington, DC

The National Sleep Foundation's 2002 Sleep in America Poll reports that in the days immediately following the 9-11 attacks, 47% of Americans polled rated their sleep as either fair or poor on most nights.  On a typical night, only 27% would report their sleep as either fair or poor.

Other interesting findings from the poll are summarized below.

Insomnia "Epidemic"
The poll results showed that more than one half of the repsondents (58%) reported having experienced at least one of the four symptoms of insomnia at least a few nights a week.  In fact, 35% say that they experience at least one of the four symptoms of insomnia every night or almost every night in the past year.

The four symptoms of insomnia are defined as:

  • difficulty falling asleep
  • waking a lot during the night
  • waking up too early and not being able to get back to sleep
  • waking up feeling unrefreshed
